Seasonal Vehicle Checks

Why are Seasonal Vehicle Checks so important?

Temperature swings affect everything from tyre pressure to battery life.

???? DRIVER ESSENTIALS

Why seasonal vehicle checks keep you safer (and save money)

????
?? WINTER oct–mar
???? SPRING mar–may
?? SUMMER jun–aug
???? AUTUMN sep–nov

Why ‘just hopping in’ can cost you

Temperature swings affect everything from tyre pressure to battery life.

UK weather is famously unpredictable – a balmy October can be followed by frosty mornings. Many drivers ignore seasonal checks until something fails. According to the AA, nearly 40% of breakdowns in winter are battery?related, while summer sees a spike in cooling system failures. A simple 15?minute check before each season reduces your risk of being stranded and can extend component life by years.

???? The 3?season rule

Most car owners know about winter checks, but spring and autumn are just as critical. Changing temperatures cause tyre pressure fluctuations (approx. 1?2 psi per 10°F change). Under?inflated tyres wear faster and increase fuel consumption by up to 3%. Meanwhile, autumn leaves and damp mean you need maximum grip and working lights.

Your season?by?season checklist

Rather than a long manual, here are the critical items for each quarter. Tick them off – most are DIY, some might need a quick garage visit.

?? Antifreeze level
?? Battery & terminals
?? Tyre tread (3mm min)
???? Wiper blades (smear test)
???? Screen wash (winter grade)
?? Coolant level
?? Air con regas
???? Lights & indicators
???? Brake fluid check
???? Heated rear window

Pro tip: Keep a log (or photo) of your checks. Some insurers offer minor discounts for documented maintenance, and it helps with resale value.

Season Common failure DIY time
?? Winter Flat battery (cold cranking amps drop) 10 min
???? Spring Pothole damage / wheel alignment visual 5 min
?? Summer Overheating / AC not cold 15 min
???? Autumn Damp brakes / poor visibility 10 min

The 20p test & pressure secrets

Tyre grip is the only thing between you and the tarmac. The UK’s minimum legal tread depth is 1.6mm, but safety experts recommend changing at 3mm for winter. The 20p test: insert a 20p coin into the main grooves – if the outer band of the coin is visible, your tread is below 3mm and you need new tyres.

Pressure should be checked monthly, and always before a long trip. Remember: underinflation increases rolling resistance and fuel bills. Use the door?jamb sticker (not the max pressure on the tyre).

?? Did you know? Incorrect tyre pressures account for nearly 10% of MOT failures. And in winter, drop of 5°C can reduce tyre pressure by 2?3 psi – enough to affect handling.

???? next full moon = perfect time to check your lights & coolant
